Duty of Care I, 2021.
Vintage linen apron, appliqué, hand stitch and print.
A 'duty of care' implies a legal or moral obligation to keep people safe, but is often paid only 'lip service' without genuine compassion for individuals. The old indigo work apron has been patched and darned as a metaphor for self-care, constantly trying to repair the damage of a neglectful workplace culture, in order to keep ourselves strong.
Exhibited in 'Home/Work' at the Knitting & Stitching Show 2021.
Duty of Care II, 2022.
Vintage linen apron, silk organza, appliqué, hand stitch, machine stitch, devoré.
In a continuation of the previous work, the apron was further deconstructed to leave parts of the apron hanging by a thread. The work becomes increasingly fragile and unstable, representing the emotional toll on those in caring roles.
